About NCHMCT

The National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology (Society) was established in 1982 by the Government of India as an autonomous body to ensure the coordinated growth and development of hospitality management education in the country. Initially set up as the National Board of Studies in Food Management, Catering & Nutrition under the administrative control of the Ministry of Agriculture (Department of Food), it was later transferred to the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, in 1984 and renamed the National Council for Hotel Management & Catering Technology.

The Council’s main office is located at A-34, Sector-62, Noida (U.P.), in its own campus, while the registered office is at Pusa, New Delhi. It regulates academics in the field of hospitality education and training, which are provided at various Institutes of Hotel Management (IHMs) and Food Craft Institutes (FCIs).

The history of IHM colleges in India dates back to 1962, with the establishment of the first Institute of Hotel Management in Pusa, New Delhi, under the joint collaboration of the Government of India and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). This was followed by the establishment of IHMs in Mumbai (1963) and Chennai (1963). Over the years, more IHMs were established across the country to meet the growing demand for trained professionals in the hospitality industry. Each IHM is designed to offer world-class education and practical training in hotel and hospitality management.

As of the Academic Year 2024-25, there are 93 institutes under the Council’s purview, comprising:

  • 21 Central Government-sponsored Institutes of Hotel Management,
  • 28 State Government-sponsored Institutes of Hotel Management,
  • 1 PSU-owned Institute,
  • 31 private Institutes, and
  • 12 Food Craft Institutes.

Among these, the Institute of Hotel Management, Dehradun (IHM Dehradun) stands out as a premier institution providing exceptional hospitality education. Nestled in the scenic Himalayan foothills, IHM Dehradun combines state-of-the-art infrastructure with industry-aligned programs and highly experienced faculty. NCHMCT is affiliated with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, which awards degrees for its programs, ensuring the highest academic and professional standards.
